This photo shows the set of ornaments that were made. The entry ornament is the manger scene in the center of the ensemble.

This view shows the ornament from top to bottom. The cap and finial are turned from zircote. The globe of the ornament is made of maple with padauk accent stripes. The ornament is first glued up with the padauk in between squares of maple. The edges are then cut to a 45 degree angle which leaves an "X" of padauk in a square of maple. The blank is then cut to 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" X 6" long. The new flat sides are then positioned in a drill press and drilled with a forstner bit creating the openings. The larger hole is drilled first by drilling in toward the center from each side. The smaller hole is then drilled in the same method. After drilling, the blank is chucked up and 1/4" holes drilled in each end stopping within 1/8" of the interior of the globe. A tenon is turned onto one end.

The tenon is placed in the chuck and the ornament is turned to an egg shape. After sanding it is parted off to a length of 4 1/2". The finial and cap are turned next. After obtaining the desired shape, a 1/4" tenon is left on the end and it is parted off. The tenons are then glued into the 1/4" drilled holes on the globe. The cap is 1 1/4" tall and the icicle finial at the bottom is 4" long.  Here you can see an oblique view of the ornament. It is easy to see the padauk accent stripe.
This image shows the interior of the globe. All of the figures are hand carved using a flex shaft tool. The standing figure is Joseph and measures 1 1/2 inches tall. The opening measures 3 1/4 inches tall. The upper hole is 1 3/4" diameter and the lower hole is 2 1/8" diameter. The final weight of the ornament is 3.2 ounces.
This image shows a close up of the interior of the globe. All of the figures are carved from holly. The straw on the floor of the globe is shaved holly that is glued in place. The figures include Jesus in the manger, Mary, Joseph, a lamb, a donkey and the Christmas star hanging from above. After all of the parts were assembled, the ornament received four coats of clear gloss lacquer.

Judges Comments
CD : Nice proportion of elements and colors. Good use of negative/positive space. Good use of the interior space - the objects fit well in the frame.
DS :  The proportions are very close. The carving is above average. Very nice ornament, and someones keep sake!
KH : I like the concept and the execution. Pleasing set of ornaments. I think the colors, sizes, and shapes work well together.
