The competition:
Design and build a wall cabinet. For purposes of this contest, a wall cabinet
is defined as a detachable cabinet that is designed to hang on a wall. Cabinets
may be of any style and built for any purpose, such as display and/or storage.
Wood must be the primary material. Built-in or floor-standing cabinets are not
eligible. Entries must have been completed between July 1, 2004 and July 1,
2005, and may not have been previously entered in a woodworking competition.
Who may enter:
This competition is open to amateurs only.
An amateur makes less than 25% of his or her income from woodworking.
Deadline for entries: July 1, 2005
Entry fee:
The fee to enter this contest is $15.00,
payable online at time of entry, by credit card only. Limit: one entry per
person.
The prizes:
The following prizes, provided by Woodcraft, shall be awarded at the judges'
discretion. In addition, all entrants will receive a special Woodcraft Magazine
subscription offer.
1st Place - $750 Woodcraft gift certificate
2nd Place - $500 Woodcraft gift certificate
3rd Place - $250 Woodcraft gift certificate
Semi-Finalists (up to 10)- $25 Woodcraft gift certificate
Basis for judging:
Entries will be judged based on design,
craftsmanship and degree of difficulty. Design considerations include function,
appearance, originality, materials selection and engineering. Craftsmanship is
all about how well the piece is made and finished: tight joints, fair curves,
surface preparation, appropriate and well-executed finishes, tight tolerances,
etc. In the event of a tie or a decision too close to call based on available
information, arrangements will be made to have an affiliated expert view the
piece(s) or have the item(s) shipped to WoodCentral for final evaluation. All
contest decisions are final.
